Club Brugge knock Atalanta out of Champions League despite Lookman’s efforts

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]talanta’s UEFA Champions League journey came to a disappointing end as Club Brugge triumphed with a 5-2 aggregate victory, sealing their spot in the Last 16.

Despite Ademola Lookman’s spirited second-half performance, the Italian side failed to overturn a damaging first-half deficit in the second leg, losing 3-1 on the night.

Atalanta entered the fixture needing a strong comeback after losing 2-1 in the first leg due to a controversial penalty decision.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was expected to go all out for victory, but the Belgian visitors dominated early and left the hosts with an uphill battle.

Club Brugge took control immediately, with Chemsdine Talbi opening the scoring in just the 3rd minute.

The Belgian side doubled their advantage in the 27th minute through Talbi again before Ferran Jutgla netted a crucial third goal in first-half stoppage time.

Trailing 3-0 at halftime and 5-1 on aggregate, Gasperini made a bold decision by introducing the recently injured Lookman in a desperate attempt to turn the tide.

Lookman wasted no time making his mark, scoring in the 46th minute after connecting with a Davide Zappacosta cross.

Moments later, the Nigerian forward thought he had won a penalty for Atalanta when VAR confirmed a foul on Juan Cuadrado by Christos Tzolis.

However, his well-struck penalty was superbly saved by Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, dashing hopes of a comeback.

Adding to Atalanta’s woes, another Lookman effort was ruled out for offside. The Italian side pushed hard but failed to break Brugge’s resilient defence, leaving them without a consecutive home win in the Champions League.

With the win, Club Brugge advanced to the Last 16, where they will learn their next opponent on Friday, with either Lille or Aston Villa awaiting them.

Meanwhile, another Italian team, AC Milan, also bowed out of the competition after a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord at the San Siro resulted in a 2-1 aggregate defeat.

Despite a lightning-fast goal from Santiago Gimenez, Milan suffered a setback when Theo Hernandez was sent off in the 51st minute.

Feyenoord capitalised, with Julian Carranza’s 73rd-minute header sealing their progression.

The Last 16 draw on Friday will determine whether Feyenoord face Inter Milan or Arsenal next month.
