Controversial singer Portable has been arraigned in Abeokuta for assaulting government officials, granted ₦2m bail as trial continues

 

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ontroversial Nigerian singer and Zaazoo Zeh crooner, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting government officials.

The singer faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, assault, obstruction, and conduct likely to cause harm.

His aides—nine in total—were also arraigned on similar charges before Magistrate O.L. Oke.

The Ogun State Police Command had earlier declared Portable wanted for allegedly attacking three town planning officers—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while they were performing their lawful duties at Odogwu Bar, owned by the singer, in Sango, Ogun State.

Portable and his co-defendants allegedly assaulted and restricted the officials while armed with cutlasses and guns. The nine aides facing the same charges are:

  • Nurudeen Warris (21)
  • Adetola Alashe (25)
  • Samuel Adeleke (28)
  • Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19)
  • Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20)
  • Gospel Kanu (20)
  • Precious Ohiegebo (19)
  • Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27)
  • Fatimo Muhammed (26)

All defendants pleaded not guilty.

 

Portable’s counsel, Oluwatoyin Ayodele, pleaded for bail, stating that the singer was remorseful and had learned his lesson. Magistrate Oke granted him bail at ₦2 million with one surety in like sum.

The case has been adjourned till March 5 for trial.
