Lagos Assembly leadership crisis

Former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s controversial return to the Lagos State House of Assembly with security escorts has intensified political tensions and raised concerns over democracy and leadership integrity

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Lagos State House of Assembly descended into chaos on Thursday as former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa announced his return to office, claiming his position as Speaker despite his removal on January 13.

Obasa’s reappearance, flanked by police and State Security Service escorts, has triggered a wave of political unrest and accusations of intimidation.

Obasa’s dramatic takeover forced the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, out of her office, with reports confirming the withdrawal of her security aides.

The Assembly complex soon became a stage for power struggles, with 23 lawmakers reportedly locked out of their offices, left to gather in the Assembly Garden as events unfolded inside.

The unfolding crisis has sparked reactions across the political spectrum. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, called the situation disappointing and called on party leadership to restore order.

Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, condemned Obasa’s actions as a “dangerous descent into lawlessness,” decrying the erosion of democratic values in the state’s leadership.

Meanwhile, supporters of Obasa celebrated his return, praising President Bola Tinubu for his alleged role in reinstating the former Speaker.

Reports indicate that an APC-led panel has recommended the resignation of both Obasa and Meranda to resolve the standoff and appoint a new Speaker from Lagos West.

As the crisis continues to unfold, political observers warn of lasting damage to the Assembly’s integrity and the potential for further instability in Lagos politics.
