President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the adoption of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, as a federal university.

This marks a historic milestone for Ogun East Senatorial District, which now has its first federally owned tertiary institution.

Established in 2005 under the administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialised university of education.

However, it faced challenges under successive Ogun State governments.

12 years later after taking over from Otunba Daniel, Governor Ibikunle Amosun attempted to shut it down, claiming the state could not fund two universities.

The move triggered massive student protests, leading to the tragic death of student leader Tunji Fashina.

Due to underfunding, the National Universities Commission (NUC) later delisted several courses.

Under Governor Dapo Abiodun, financial difficulties persisted.

TASUED lecturers repeatedly protested unpaid salaries and stagnated wages, while the institution struggled with inadequate funding.

The lack of government support threatened its survival until President Tinubu’s intervention.

Otunba Daniel, who spearheaded the university’s establishment, expressed deep appreciation for the federalization of TASUED.

In his statement, he described the move as a “watershed moment” for Ogun East.

The senator representing Ogun East at the national assembly emphasized that federal recognition secures the university’s funding, restores its academic standing, and strengthens Nigeria’s teacher education sector.

“This strategic acquisition aligns with our vision to enhance instructional quality nationwide,” Daniel stated.

“It ensures the institution’s continued existence and evolution to a greater status.”

With this adoption, TASUED will now receive federal funding, expanded infrastructure, and improved academic programs, solidifying its role as a leading centre for teacher education in Nigeria.
