The incident, which occurred at the Oriental Hotel area on Monday, has sparked widespread outrage.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the actions taken by the police.

According to Hundeyin, the woman, identified as Yetunde Amole, bravely intervened when she witnessed the suspect attempting to steal her car battery. This led to the suspect assaulting her in broad daylight.

The assault, which was captured on camera, quickly went viral, prompting a swift response from the authorities. Officers from the Maroko Division apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident and placed him under detention.

“The incident occurred around 2:00 pm on Monday. Amole courageously intervened to prevent the theft, which led to the suspect assaulting her,” Hundeyin explained.

Despite being detained, the suspect’s plans to face court proceedings were delayed after he suddenly fell ill. The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect was transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under close supervision.

Hundeyin assured the public that once the suspect is medically cleared by police professionals, he will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction.

“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents. We are determined to see that justice is served in this case,” Hundeyin stated.

He also praised Amole for her bravery and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to pursuing justice for all victims of crime in Lagos State.
