Speaker Obasa calls for unity as court declares removal illegal, unconstitutional

Speaker Obasa court ruling

Court declares Obasa’s January removal illegal. Speaker calls for unity, peace, and continued service to Lagos State.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, has commended the Lagos High Court ruling that declared his January 2025 removal from office “illegal, unconstitutional, and null and void.”

In a statement from his media office, Speaker Obasa hailed the decision as a victory for democratic principles and legislative integrity.

“This is a victory for the Lagos House of Assembly as an institution and for our current and future members,” Obasa stated.

Obasa further described the ruling as a call to unity, urging members of the House to move forward together in peace and harmony.

“The court decision reinforces the desire for us as members of the House to move ahead in unity and harmony and continue to work for the good of our people, our beloved Lagos State, and Nigeria,” he added.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, declared Obasa’s removal—while he was on official assignment in the United States—as procedurally flawed and unconstitutional. The court also invalidated all proceedings and resolutions passed during the January 13, 2025 session that led to his ousting.

Obasa had filed a suit on February 12, 2025, through his counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), arguing that the session was unlawfully convened while the House was on recess and without proper delegation of power from his office. The defendants were the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

Relying on the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Assembly’s Standing Orders, the court ruling effectively annuls all actions taken during that session.

Speaker Obasa now calls on his colleagues to put differences aside and work in service of Lagosians.
