Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University’s Governing Council has given a lecturer the boot after he was found guilty of sexually harassing a married postgraduate student
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]bubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State has dismissed a lecturer, Dr Usman Aliyu, following his indictment for the sexual harassment of a married female postgraduate student.
The Director of Information and Public Relations for the university, Mr Zailani Bappa, confirmed the dismissal in a statement released on Thursday.

According to Mr Bappa, the decision to terminate Dr Aliyu’s employment was ratified during the 96th regular meeting of the university’s Governing Council, held on April 11, 2025.
Mr Bappa explained that the dismissal followed a thorough investigation by the university’s Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, which found Dr Aliyu guilty of the alleged offence.
The female student, who was reportedly sexually harassed, is enrolled in the Department of Chemical Engineering, within the Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology at ATBU.
“Yes, it’s true,” Mr Bappa stated, “the lecturer was confirmed guilty of the offence by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee of the institution. The dismissal is in accordance with the chapter 3, item f, i, (o) of the Senior Staff Conditions of Service of the university.”

He further added that, “The council has subsequently approved his dismissal from the service of the university with immediate effect. In view of this, he has been directed to hand over all the property of the university in his possession to his Head of Department and identification card to the Chief Security Officer of the university.”
