Enugu native doctor ritual

A native doctor in Enugu State, Onyeka Obu, was busted for allegedly burying multiple people, including a pregnant woman, alive in a sewage pit for rituals, leading to the demolition of his property

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] wave of outrage swept through Enugu State on Monday, May 27, 2025, after vigilante operatives in Umumba Ndiagu, Ezeagu Local Government Area, busted a native doctor identified as Onyeka Obu, popularly known as Ozo Ezeani or “E dey play, E dey show,” for allegedly burying several people alive in a sewage pit for ritualistic purposes.

Several video clips circulating on Facebook depicted gruesome images of bodies, including that of a pregnant woman, found in a sewage pit located at the native doctor’s ongoing building site near his residence.

Residents, upon the shocking discovery, reportedly set ablaze the native doctor’s apartment and vehicles.

“The dead bodies found in Ezeani’s soakaway (sewage pit) clearly show he had been a ritualist, not a native doctor,” Emeka Ozougwu, a resident, told PREMIUM TIMES, reflecting the widespread anger heard in the video clips.

Residents explained that the alleged ritualistic acts came to light when two boys working for Obu allegedly abducted a 13-year-old girl from the community.

One resident, who preferred anonymity, stated that the girl was subsequently pushed into the sewage pit. In a video clip, the terrified girl (name withheld) was heard narrating how the boys bundled her onto their motorcycle and sped off.

The girl’s father, in another clip, confirmed her abduction in his presence and reported the incident to the community’s vigilante group, initially believing his daughter had been kidnapped.

According to a resident, vigilante operatives later spotted the boys with the girl on their motorcycle and traced them to the native doctor’s apartment.

When we entered the house, we discovered that the girl was in the pit. We flashed our torchlight and saw several dead bodies in the pit. We now rescued the girl.

Mr. Ezeani reportedly attempted to deceive the operatives, feigning surprise and trying to prevent them from entering his premises. However, the operatives forced their way into his building site after hearing the girl’s persistent cries.

A leader of the vigilante operatives, who requested anonymity, described the horrifying discovery: “When we entered the house, we discovered that the girl was in the pit. We flashed our torchlight and saw several dead bodies in the pit. We now rescued the girl.”

He added that the native doctor and his boys allegedly belong to a secret society called “White Club Kingdom,” often presenting themselves as members of a harmless association.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2025, the Chairperson of Ezeagu Local Government Area, Vitalis Ndu, visited the native doctor’s apartment and the sewage pit, subsequently reporting the incident to the Enugu State Government for action.

The state government has since demolished the native doctor’s apartment. Josh Ejeh, an aide to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, confirmed the demolition on Facebook: “Happening now: The kidnappers and ritualists’ den in Umumba Ndiagu where dead bodies and kidnapped victims were recovered by security operatives is up for demolition.”

He added, “I’m there to inspect the development. No room for kidnappers and ritualists in Enugu.” Mr. Ejeh later uploaded a video showing the demolition of the buildings.

The Enugu State Government has a policy of demolishing properties linked to kidnapping and violent crimes, a practice backed by Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State 2017.

Attempts to reach the police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, for comments were unsuccessful.
