Nigeria has intensified talks with China’s Sino Steel, aiming for Ajaokuta Steel Revival to restore the industrial giant. This move is a key part of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on bringing the Ajaokuta Steel Company back to full operation

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n a decisive step towards reviving Nigeria’s long-stalled steel industry, top government officials have opened strategic talks with Sino Steel, one of China’s leading steel conglomerates, to restore the Ajaokuta Steel Company to full productivity.

The meeting, held between Joseph Tegbe, Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), and the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, with senior executives of Sino Steel, marks a fresh push to resuscitate the once-promising industrial behemoth.

At the centre of the discussions was the revitalisation of Ajaokuta Steel Company, a facility seen as key to unlocking Nigeria’s manufacturing potential, creating thousands of jobs, and supporting sectors such as automotive, construction and heavy machinery.

The talks covered technical evaluations, operational modelling, and financing options for the long-delayed relaunch of the plant, which has an installed capacity of 1.9 million tonnes annually, with potential expansion to 5 million tonnes.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government is placing renewed focus on industrialisation and infrastructure-led growth. Ajaokuta is positioned as a cornerstone of this agenda.

This collaboration reflects a strong alignment between Nigerian economic aspirations and China’s expertise in large-scale industrial development.

Joseph Tegbe described the dialogue as “strategic, technical, and action-oriented,” highlighting that it underscores a clear alignment between Nigeria’s economic vision and China’s industrial development expertise.

Sino Steel, for its part, expressed commitment to sending a technical team to Nigeria in the coming weeks to conduct an on-site viability study.

Following that, the company is expected to submit a detailed proposal outlining a phased roadmap for modernising and optimising the facility.

Honourable Minister Shuaibu Audu reaffirmed the government’s resolve to move beyond promises. “We are determined to work with credible international partners and deliver a functional, competitive steel sector that will power Nigeria’s industrial aspirations,” he said.

This meeting is the latest in a series of high-level engagements between Nigerian and Chinese officials, as the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership continues to play a key role in strengthening bilateral ties in infrastructure, manufacturing, and industrial development.

These moves are consistent with the shared priorities of President Tinubu and China’s President Xi Jinping.

As global demand for steel remains high, the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company could transform Nigeria into a regional industrial hub—if the vision finally moves from blueprint to reality.
