Starlink resumes activations across Nigeria after upgrading its network, promising faster internet for homes and businesses in underserved and high-demand areas

The satellite internet provider, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, confirmed the development following months of suspension due to regulatory delays and limited capacity.

The company had halted new residential orders in November 2024. Prospective customers were met with a message on the website indicating that activations were paused pending clearance from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

This pause affected thousands of Nigerians eager to access high-speed satellite internet, particularly in areas underserved by traditional broadband.

With the green light now granted and infrastructure significantly upgraded, Starlink has re-opened access to its satellite internet kits.

This move includes improved bandwidth and expanded capacity to accommodate more users. High-demand locations such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt are at the forefront of the resumed roll-out.

“This is a significant stride towards bridging the digital divide and revolutionising connectivity across the nation,” a spokesperson for Nigeria’s third-largest internet provider said in a statement.

The enhancements promise more stable connections and faster speeds for both residential and business users.

Especially in rural and semi-urban areas where fibre broadband is either unavailable or unreliable, the development is seen as a game-changer.

In response to the announcement, Starlink’s top retail partner in Nigeria, Konga, expressed optimism and introduced additional incentives.

The e-commerce company pledged free nationwide delivery for all Starlink kits. According to the firm, customers can place orders online or visit outlets in major cities including Uyo, Owerri, Ikeja, Enugu, Warri, and more.

“Whether customers order online or walk into any of our retail outlets… their Starlink kits will be delivered at no extra cost,” Konga affirmed.

The return of activations is expected to bolster remote work, online learning, digital services, and economic inclusion.

Analysts say Starlink’s service, though premium in price, remains a vital alternative in regions where terrestrial networks fall short.

As more Nigerians embrace digital transformation, the availability of a reliable and high-speed satellite internet option strengthens the country’s internet ecosystem and supports ongoing efforts to bridge the urban-rural connectivity gap.egion.
