Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, writing from the United States on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, warned that artificial intelligence could permanently eliminate many jobs and create one of the most turbulent periods in human history unless governments, businesses and communities prepare urgently for the transition.
Gates issued the warning in a more than 6,000-word essay, The Turbulent AI Era Is Here.

The Choices We Make Now Are Critical, published on his Gates Notes website, where he argued that societies are moving towards a technological transformation without an adequate plan for managing its economic and social consequences.
“In terms of equity, AI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice,” Gates wrote.
His concern is not that artificial intelligence will simply trigger another temporary downturn.
Gates believes the technology could alter the structure of employment itself, particularly as increasingly capable systems take over tasks that currently require trained workers.
“Many jobs will disappear forever,” he wrote, identifying entry-level and mid-level employment as particularly vulnerable.
Gates argued that the speed of AI adoption makes the present transformation fundamentally different from earlier technological shifts.
He recalled the arrival of personal computers, which took years to reshape workplaces because software had to be developed, prices had to fall and workers had to learn how to use the new technology.
AI, he said, can spread much faster because it operates through devices people already possess and can interact through natural language.
As AI systems become capable of watching training material, processing existing data and adapting to users, the barriers to adoption become considerably lower.
That could put a wide range of occupations under pressure.
Gates identified sales and customer support, software engineering and paralegal work among roles that could be affected early.
He also pointed to loan assessment, data analysis and patient triage as examples of work that increasingly sophisticated AI systems could perform.
The disruption may not remain confined to office-based employment.
Gates expects increasingly capable robots to compete with people for some physical tasks in construction and hospitality by the end of the decade.
He argued that market incentives to reduce costs could accelerate the adoption of both AI and robotics.
The point at which AI becomes sufficiently reliable to work without human supervision, Gates suggested, could represent the biggest shift for employees.
At that stage, companies would have a strong economic incentive to remove human oversight from tasks that machines can perform consistently, potentially reducing demand for workers rather than simply changing how existing employees perform their jobs.
Gates is particularly concerned about young people entering the workforce.
He warned that fewer entry-level openings could make it harder for young workers to gain the experience traditionally required to progress into more skilled positions.
At the same time, many of the new jobs created by AI could require years of training, creating a difficult transition for workers displaced from existing roles.
The concern has some grounding in wider economic research, although international studies do not predict that all AI-exposed jobs will disappear.
The International Labour Organisation reported in 2025 that one in four workers globally was in an occupation with some exposure to generative AI, but concluded that job transformation was more likely than outright replacement because most occupations still contain tasks requiring human input.
The International Monetary Fund has estimated that almost 40 per cent of global employment is exposed to AI, with the potential impact ranging from job displacement to increased productivity.
Its analysis found that exposure is considerably higher in advanced economies, at about 60 per cent, compared with 40 per cent in emerging markets and 26 per cent in low-income countries.
Those figures underline an important distinction in the debate. Exposure to AI does not automatically mean a job will vanish.
In many cases, AI is expected to alter tasks within an occupation rather than eliminate the occupation itself.
The ILO’s latest assessment similarly found that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant, reinforcing the importance of how employers and governments manage the transition.
For Gates, however, the possibility of permanent displacement is serious enough to demand intervention before the effects become irreversible.
He has proposed a concept he calls “Human Reserved”, under which certain roles would be deliberately protected from automation because they depend heavily on human judgement, empathy and relationships.
His personal experience helped shape that argument. Gates recalled the care his father received while living with Alzheimer’s disease, describing the caregivers who understood his father’s needs even when he struggled to communicate.
For Gates, that kind of care represents something technology should complement rather than replace.
The proposal is part of a broader attempt to redefine what work should look like in an economy where machines can increasingly perform cognitive as well as physical tasks.
Gates has also floated taxes on AI-driven labour and robots as possible tools for slowing excessive automation and helping governments compensate for declining employment-related tax revenues.
The idea is intended to address what he sees as a structural imbalance in a tax system that can encourage businesses to replace workers with machines.
But Gates’ warning extends well beyond employment.
He identified cyberattacks, fraud, disinformation, deepfakes, surveillance and bioterrorism among the dangers that could become more accessible as AI capabilities improve.
“The resources needed to make an attack are going down significantly,” Gates wrote, warning that the same technology that makes legitimate work easier can also increase the capabilities available to malicious actors.
Critical infrastructure could become an especially attractive target, including hospitals, financial institutions, water systems, electricity networks and government benefit systems.
Gates also raised a more fundamental concern: increasingly powerful AI systems could eventually behave in ways their creators did not anticipate, making control itself a central challenge.
Yet the Microsoft co-founder did not portray AI as an inherently destructive force.
He argued that the same technology could accelerate progress in healthcare, agriculture, education and clean energy, particularly if governments ensure that the benefits reach people beyond wealthy countries and technology companies.
In agriculture, Gates believes AI could give farmers in low-income countries access to reliable weather information, advice on crops and livestock disease, and better soil-management techniques.
He also sees opportunities to expand access to medical expertise and education while reducing bureaucratic burdens.
“AI can improve life for people at every income level. But it won’t do that automatically,” Gates wrote.
That caveat sits at the heart of his argument.
Gates wants governments to establish domestic and international institutions capable of managing a technology that cuts across employment, taxation, education, national security, elections, healthcare, energy, finance and transportation.
He argues that existing institutions were not designed for a technology capable of spreading across so many areas of life at such speed.
The call comes as governments worldwide struggle to determine how far regulation should go without suppressing technological development.
Gates believes neither technology companies nor governments should make those decisions alone and has called for workers, educators, healthcare professionals, community leaders and policymakers to participate in shaping the rules.
He has also stressed the need for international cooperation because AI risks do not stop at national borders.
Gates has sought discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on global AI policy and has argued that the major AI powers need common standards before geopolitical competition makes cooperation more difficult.
The debate is particularly consequential for developing economies, where lower current exposure to AI may provide more time to prepare but weaker digital infrastructure could also limit access to the technology’s benefits.
The ILO has warned that countries need social dialogue and targeted policies to manage the transition, while IMF research has highlighted the importance of digital infrastructure, training and social safety nets in helping economies adapt.
Gates’ warning therefore sits somewhere between technological alarm and guarded optimism.
He is not calling for humanity to abandon AI. Instead, he is arguing that societies must decide now how much disruption they are willing to accept, which forms of work should remain distinctly human and how the wealth created by increasingly capable machines should be distributed.
“If we get it right, the payoff for humanity will be phenomenal and the world will be a more equitable place,” Gates wrote.

The challenge, as he sees it, is ensuring that governments begin preparing before the jobs disappear rather than attempting to rebuild economic security afterwards.
