Tinubu at BRICS summit in Brazil urges global financial restructuring and youth-focused solutions, pledging Nigeria’s leadership in renewable energy and healthcare

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for urgent global financial restructuring and a reevaluation of the international order, as he addressed fellow leaders at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Speaking at the high-level gathering, Tinubu at BRICS emphasised that the bloc must go beyond representing emerging economies and evolve into a platform for real-world solutions anchored in solidarity, self-reliance, and shared prosperity.

“Nigeria associates with what I have heard at BRICS here in Rio, Brazil. The next issues are financial restructuring and reevaluation of the global structure,” President Tinubu said.

He urged the bloc to adopt a forward-thinking approach by crafting policies that directly address the challenges faced by young people.

“Youths make up 70% of Nigeria’s population. We must be the architects of a future that addresses their specific needs and concerns,” he noted.

The Nigerian leader used the opportunity to assert Nigeria’s position on the global stage, declaring that the country is no longer a passive participant but an active contributor to international development.

“We are taking bold, homegrown steps to accelerate renewable energy, mainstream climate action, strengthen urban resilience, and expand healthcare access,” Tinubu stated.

He added, “The world is changing. Nigeria will not be left behind. We will help lead the way.”

His remarks reflect Nigeria’s ongoing push for a seat at the table in discussions about global governance, development finance, and the climate agenda—particularly as countries in the Global South seek a more balanced and equitable global system.

President Tinubu’s message at the BRICS summit underlines Nigeria’s ambition to move from being a recipient of global decisions to a co-author of new global frameworks tailored to the realities of developing nations.
