Island Club mourns Awujale

Island Club mourns Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, a revered Yoruba monarch who passed at 91 after decades of visionary traditional leadership

Island Club mourns Awujale of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025, at the age of 91.

The revered monarch’s death was confirmed by Ogun State Government and has triggered an outpouring of grief across the country.

In a heartfelt statement, the management and members of Island Club Lagos paid tribute to the late royal father, describing him as a cultural icon and voice of progressive traditional leadership.

The message, issued on behalf of the Club Chairman, Omo’ba Dr. Rotimi Olasode Martins, KCOP, was signed by the Honorary General Secretary, Aare Ayodele Bankole, KCOP.

“His Royal Majesty departed this world earlier today at the remarkable age of 91, having lived an extraordinary life of impact, leadership, courage, and cultural preservation,” the Club stated.

Island Club mourns Awujale not only for his long reign as monarch but also for the wisdom and dignity with which he conducted his royal duties.

Installed in 1960 as the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. He redefined Yoruba kingship through intellect, integrity, and a commitment to modernity.

“For decades, he remained a shining light in the national discourse on true federalism, justice, and good governance,” the Club noted, highlighting his advocacy for decentralisation and traditional authority’s relevance in democratic settings.

Oba Adetona was not only a beacon of traditional authority, but also a symbol of moral strength, developmental vision, and unshakable commitment to the dignity of the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large.

Oba Adetona was a Vice Patron of Island Club, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious social institutions.

His connection to the Club spanned many years, during which he consistently championed Yoruba culture and the values of justice and equity.

Island Club mourns Awujale as a monarch whose reign brought unprecedented development to Ijebuland and elevated Ogun State’s profile in national dialogue.

The late king also spearheaded reforms in traditional governance and was instrumental in promoting religious tolerance through his support for legal provisions allowing traditional rulers to be buried according to their faith.

“Island Club mourns the loss of this towering cultural icon and statesman whose values and presence enriched our heritage and national identity,” the statement added.

The Club also extended its condolences to the family of the late monarch, the people of Ijebuland, the Ogun State government led by Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, CON, and Nigerians at large.

Oba Adetona’s contributions, they said, transcend traditional rulership and reflect the highest ideals of service, wisdom, and moral leadership.

The late monarch will be buried in Ijebu Ode in accordance with Islamic rites. His legacy lives on through the numerous cultural, educational, and social initiatives he either championed or inspired.

The void left behind by his departure is profound, but his example continues to guide future generations of leaders, both traditional and modern.
