NARD Strike Crisis

NMA Strike Notice gives FG 21 days to meet 19 welfare demands. Nigerian doctors threaten indefinite strike over neglect of health sector and unpaid arrears

The NMA Strike Notice has sparked national alarm as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of a total, indefinite nationwide strike.

In a communique released after an Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM) held on July 26, 2025, in Abuja, the association criticized the Bola Tinubu administration’s failure to address 19 critical welfare demands and accused the government of systemic neglect of the country’s healthcare system.

“The EDM following extensive deliberations unanimously condemns the attitude of the Federal Government to the welfare of its members,” the communique read.

Key among their grievances is the non-payment of seven-month arrears of the 25/35% CONMESS adjustment, delayed implementation of signed agreements, and a controversial NSIWC circular that was suspended but not withdrawn.

The NMA condemned medical tourism by Nigerian leaders while local facilities remain underfunded, calling it “persistent neglect.”

They warned that government inaction could worsen brain drain and further collapse Nigeria’s already fragile health indices.

Despite the stern tone, the NMA Strike Notice expressed hope that the government would act decisively to avoid industrial action and healthcare disruption.
