Illegal Colleges of Education shut down across Nigeria as NCCE intensifies efforts to clean up the sector and protect academic integrity.

Illegal Colleges of Education are being rooted out across Nigeria, as the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has successfully identified and shut down 22 unapproved institutions operating in violation of national regulations.

This decisive move follows a nationwide crackdown aimed at protecting the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.

The Commission made this known in a recently released achievement report obtained by our correspondent.

According to the report, the NCCE conducted a series of thorough personnel audits and financial monitoring across all 21 federal Colleges of Education.

During this process, 22 illegal institutions were uncovered and closed.

The development aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent call for sweeping reforms in the education sector.

Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria, the President — represented by Director of University Education, Rakiya Ilyasu — described such illegal operators as “certificate millers” threatening academic integrity.

President Tinubu emphasized that agencies such as the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE must act decisively to rid the system of unrecognized institutions.

“The integrity of our academic system must not be compromised,” he declared, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to collaboration among education agencies, including JAMB and NYSC, to ensure quality education across all levels.

As part of this mission, the NCCE’s continued effort to eliminate illegal Colleges of Education sends a strong message to unlicensed institutions operating within and outside the country: There is no hiding place.
