Kairat Almaty Champions League debut confirmed after stunning Celtic in penalty shootout to book historic UCL group-stage spot

Kairat Almaty Champions League aspirations became reality on Tuesday night, as the Kazakh side etched their name in football history by defeating Celtic 3–2 on penalties in Almaty.

The triumph secured their first-ever UEFA Champions League group-stage berth, sparking celebrations across Kazakhstan.

After two goalless legs, the underdogs held firm before edging the Scottish giants in a nerve-wracking shootout a result that sees Celtic relegated to the Europa League.

The night belonged to 21-year-old goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov, whose crucial save in the 112th minute and two stops during the shootout proved decisive.

He denied Luke McCowan late in extra time and then kept his cool to frustrate Daizen Maeda and Matt O’Riley from the spot.

The young keeper’s heroics were met with roars of jubilation as Kairat’s players and fans soaked in a momentous achievement.

Despite dominating possession and registering 22 shots across both legs, Celtic failed to convert their chances  only eight shots were on target.

Manager Brendan Rodgers admitted the loss was a “huge blow.”

“We were defensively okay but couldn’t make the breakthrough… when it goes to penalties anything can happen. Very disappointed. It’s a massive opportunity missed.”

Rodgers also cited transfer delays and poor pitch conditions in Almaty as factors that disrupted their rhythm.

Kairat becomes just the second club from Kazakhstan to reach the Champions League group stage, following Astana’s breakthrough in 2015.

Their success marks a milestone in Kazakh football and underscores the growing competitiveness of clubs in non-traditional football markets.

It was a night of firsts for clubs across the continent:

Bodo/Glimt secured Norway’s first UCL group-stage appearance since 2007 despite a 2–1 loss at Sturm Graz, thanks to a commanding 6–2 aggregate score.

Pafos FC earned a debut berth after edging Red Star Belgrade 3–2 on aggregate.

A late goal by Jaja sealed the deal in Cyprus.
