Omoluabi Parapo complaint slams Owambe Lagos Party over cultural misrepresentation and Yoruba spelling errors in event branding

Omoluabi Parapo complaint has been formally lodged with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture against the upcoming Owambe Lagos Party, an event organized by artist Uzo Njoku and scheduled to run from November 22, 2025, to January 24, 2026.

In the petition addressed to Commissioner Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the cultural group raised concerns over what it described as a serious issue of cultural misrepresentation.

At the heart of their complaint is the misspelling of the Yoruba word “Owambe,” which the group insists should correctly be written as Òwànbé.

The Omoluabi Parapo stated that such errors go beyond mere oversight, warning that they risk distorting Yoruba language, heritage, and traditions.

According to the group, authenticity must be prioritized when cultural expressions are promoted on global platforms, especially under Lagos State’s tourism and creative economy.

While acknowledging the positive intention of showcasing Nigerian creativity, the group emphasized the need for accuracy and respect for cultural roots.

They urged the Ministry to compel organizers to consult Yoruba scholars and custodians to prevent further misrepresentation.

This powerful intervention reflects growing concerns over cultural appropriation in entertainment and tourism branding.

Supporters of the complaint argue that protecting language and identity is as vital as celebrating Nigerian art on the international stage.
