Oluyede Troop Welfare reforms earn praise as civil society hails the Army Chief’s bold commitment to soldiers’ wellbeing and operational readiness

Oluyede Troop Welfare reforms are winning public approval, as a coalition of civil society unions applauded the Chief of Army Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, for his ongoing commitment to improving the lives and working conditions of Nigerian troops.

In a recent statement, the Campaign Against Injustice (CAI) expressed strong support for what it described as a “bold and people-first leadership approach” by the Army Chief.

The group believes Oluyede’s focus on welfare has already boosted troop morale and sharpened operational performance on the ground.

Speaking from Lagos, CAI’s convener Abbey Jolaosho said the reforms reaffirm General Oluyede’s determination to win the war against terrorism through both military strategy and human-centred policy.

“We are particularly impressed by the COAS’s attention to soldiers’ needs, from accommodation to uniforms and better meal allowances. Oluyede Troop Welfare policy is not just administrative—it’s inspirational,” Jolaosho said.

This commendation comes after General Oluyede’s operational visit to Godwin Ally Barracks in Cross River State, where he reaffirmed his “Soldiers First” mantra.

He ordered the renovation of barracks facilities and pledged improved living conditions for soldiers and their families. Troops were also assured of new uniforms and ongoing upgrades to their kits.

The welfare reforms include increased Ration Cash Allowance, improved school facilities for soldiers’ children, and direct engagement with troops to understand their daily challenges.

In his address, Oluyede reiterated his focus on professionalism, discipline, and cooperation with other security agencies and communities, positioning the Nigerian Army as not just a fighting force but a national partner in peacebuilding.

CAI has called on Nigerians to support the military and play their part in tackling national security threats. “The Army needs the trust and involvement of the people.

Terrorism is not just the Army’s war—it’s our collective battle,” the group noted.

With Oluyede Troop Welfare reforms gaining traction, many see this as a promising shift in Nigeria’s defence policy—one that puts people at the heart of national security.
