Lamine Yamal is driven by Ballon d’Or defeat to Ousmane Dembele, says Hansi Flick, who insists the Barcelona teenager will rise to greater heights
The 18-year-old winger finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele at Monday’s Ballon d’Or gala in Paris, though he claimed the Kopa Trophy for the world’s best young player.

Speaking on Wednesday, Flick said the setback would fuel Yamal’s hunger for success. “I spoke with him yesterday, and I think he sees it the right way.
It’s motivation for the next years,” the coach explained.
“Dembele deserved it also, it’s a vote and many things can happen. Yamal accepted this in a good way, and he’s motivated to show his quality this season.
Maybe next season he will also be an option for the Ballon d’Or.”
Yamal was pivotal in Barcelona’s domestic treble triumph last season, lifting La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
He will, however, miss Thursday’s league clash with Real Oviedo owing to a groin issue, as Barça chase leaders Real Madrid, who moved five points clear with victory over Levante.
Despite the teenager’s absence, Flick stressed faith in his squad’s depth. “I never think about which player we are missing, I only focus on the team we have. Every starting XI can win matches. It’s not a big problem.”
Barcelona’s injury list also includes midfielder Gavi, sidelined for four to five months following knee surgery.
The 21-year-old, who previously endured almost a year out with a ligament tear in 2023, has the full support of his manager.
“We have to take care of him, step by step. He has a huge career ahead. He plays with a big heart, with so much emotion. We will support him until he reaches his best level again,” Flick added.
