Taye Currency criticised after controversial lyrics at Olubadan coronation, with Nigerians calling the performance unbefitting

Taye Currency has come under heavy criticism following his performance at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The fuji musician, who performed on Friday in Ibadan, triggered outrage with the lyrics “were la fi n wo were” a Yoruba phrase meaning “we used insanity to cure insanity.”

Many Nigerians condemned the choice of words as crude and unbefitting of such a historic ceremony.

The grand installation of Oba Ladoja came two months after the passing of the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

The event was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Adeoye, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade.

Within hours, Taye Currency became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter), where critics voiced their disappointment.

Some described the performance as an embarrassment to Ibadan indigenes, while others blamed organisers for selecting him over other prominent fuji stars.

One user wrote: “Total embarrassment to his family. Not Ibadan people. On coronation day?” Another added: “It was a historic disappointment, an embarrassment to Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora.

The songs rendered were not fitting for such a historic occasion.”

The uproar has since sparked broader debate on cultural sensitivity and the responsibility of musicians performing at traditional ceremonies, particularly when the event holds deep historical and symbolic importance.
