Taye Currency disrespect

Taye Currency disrespect at Olubadan coronation draws criticism from Oba Tejuosho for uncultured lyrics, undermining Yoruba tradition and ceremony

Taye Currency disrespect has sparked widespread criticism after the popular Fuji musician performed “disgusting and uncultured lyrics” during the installation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday.

The performance, captured in a viral video, featured Currency singing in Yoruba “Were la fi n wo were,” meaning “we cure madness with madness.”

Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, condemned the act, stating that such lyrics were “classless and unbefitting” of a sacred coronation event.

In a statement on Saturday, Oba Tejuosho emphasised that a monarch’s coronation is a momentous occasion, steeped in tradition, grandeur, and collective pride.

“The throne of our ancestors is not a stage for mockery, nor the coronation of a great monarch a subject for careless entertainment,” he said.

He further explained that music at royal events must uphold respect, honor, and cultural dignity.

“Words must carry weight, rhythm must uphold respect, and melody must be a vessel of honor. To do otherwise is to stain the dignity of our heritage,” Oba Tejuosho added.

The royal father also questioned the organisers’ decision to feature Currency instead of more culturally appropriate artists such as King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, or Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate).

He suggested that calmer, locally respected musicians like Alh Rasheed Ayinde (Merenge) would have been a better choice for such a high-profile event attended by dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Oba Tejuosho’s comments highlight the importance of preserving the sacredness of Yoruba tradition during ceremonies and ensuring that music and performances reflect the gravitas of the occasion.
