Umaru Bago Niger Day at UNGA highlights a 30-year vision for Niger State with global MoUs on agriculture, youth empowerment, and healthcare

Umaru Bago Niger Day at the United Nations General Assembly in New York has put Niger State in the international spotlight, as Governor Umaru Bago unveiled the state’s 30-year vision to investors, policymakers, and the Nigerian diaspora.

The inaugural Niger Day, held on the sidelines of the UNGA, featured high-level panel discussions on Human Capital Development and Investments as well as Agricultural Transformation.

The state’s long-term plan is anchored on four pillars: improved livelihoods, a sustainable economy, urban renewal with rural transformation, and accountable governance.

According to a statement from the Niger Secretariat, the agenda is designed “to lift millions out of poverty,

promote world-class industries, modernise urban and rural areas, and establish accountable institutions, positioning Niger State as a model for subnational transformation in Africa.”

A major highlight was the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding covering agriculture, youth empowerment, and healthcare.

One of the agreements, with Salin 247 Inc., focuses on agricultural mechanisation “through AI and smart technology.”

Another, with Junior Achievement Nigeria, will roll out the School-to-Work Education Transition for Long-term Youth Fulfillment programme, aimed at empowering young people.

The third MoU, with Ethnomet Inc., will deploy 274 Virtual Primary Care Centres – one in every ward – to revolutionise healthcare delivery and training through technology.

“These partnerships reaffirm Niger State’s commitment to transforming agriculture, empowering youth, boosting school enrolment, and enhancing primary healthcare, with a focus on people-centred sustainable development,” the statement read.

Governor Bago joined Nigeria’s delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the 80th UNGA.

He also participated in side events, including the US-Africa Trade Investment Conference (Tradelink 2025), climate financing forums, and roundtables on economic growth, health, and innovation.

By using the global platform to woo investors and highlight Niger’s opportunities in agriculture, trade, technology, and cultural exchange, Bago positioned the state as a future hub for subnational transformation in Africa.
