Goodluck Jonathan clarifies Boko Haram claims, denying any suggestion that Buhari had links with the terrorist group during his presidency

The former president issued the clarification following widespread media misrepresentation of his remarks at the book launch of former Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor.

Jonathan, through his spokesman Ikechukwu Eze, stated: “At no time did Dr Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram or that he supported the group in any form.”

He explained that his comments were intended to highlight the manipulative tactics used by Boko Haram: the group had often invoked the names of respected public figures to sow confusion and exploit political divisions.

Jonathan emphasised that his remarks were illustrative of the terrorist organisation’s duplicity, not an accusation against any individual.

“The point Dr Jonathan sought to make was that Boko Haram, in its characteristic deceit, often exploited prominent Nigerians to undermine public confidence,” the statement read.

Jonathan also questioned the logic of linking Buhari to the group, noting: “If indeed Buhari was their choice negotiator, why didn’t Boko Haram end their terrorist agenda when he became president?”

He concluded by affirming the shared commitment of both leaders to peace: “President Muhammadu Buhari, like every patriotic Nigerian, stood firmly against terrorism and was himself a target of Boko Haram violence.

Both men, during their respective tenures, shared a commitment to restoring peace and stability in Nigeria.”

The former president urged the public to disregard misinterpretations of his remarks and reiterated his dedication to unity, democracy, and national progress.
