Kano State internally generated revenue doubles to ₦74.77bn in 2024, reflecting strong reforms and improved compliance across the state economy

Kano State internally generated revenue has witnessed an impressive transformation in 2024, doubling to ₦74.77 billion, up from ₦37.38 billion recorded in 2023.

This dramatic rise, confirmed by the National Bureau of Statistics and supported by Statista, positions Kano as one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in terms of revenue growth.

According to the data, only Enugu State outpaced Kano, with a staggering 433 percent increase. Kano’s 100 percent rise, however, places it ahead of other notable states like Cross River, Anambra, and Bauchi.

This turnaround is being widely credited to a sweeping reform of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service, introduced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration shortly after he assumed office.

His government prioritised efficiency and transparency, rooting out loopholes and increasing compliance without introducing new taxes.

In a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, the administration’s approach was described as both effective and people-focused.

He noted that the revenue boost came without putting extra financial pressure on residents, particularly small-scale operators such as tricycle riders who had previously been overburdened.

Governor Yusuf’s decision to appoint skilled professionals to lead the state’s revenue board was a decisive factor in this progress. The result has been a more robust collection system and a sharp reduction in waste and leakages.

“People are asking how we’re funding the infrastructure they see,” Ibrahim said. “This is the answer.”

The government remains committed to maintaining this trajectory. Ibrahim added that more fiscal reforms are underway to sustain the momentum and ensure even better service delivery across the state.
