Tertiary Education Trust Fund unutilised funds face strict review

FG orders tertiary institutions to submit reports on unutilised Tertiary Education Trust Fund allocations within 30 days to enhance transparency and efficiency

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund unutilised funds are now under stringent scrutiny as the Federal Government directs Nigerian tertiary institutions to submit detailed reports on all unused intervention funds within 30 days.

Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa issued the directive during a meeting with institution heads in Abuja, citing concerns about significant allocations that remain idle due to administrative bottlenecks.

Alausa stressed that unutilised funds could be redirected to priority projects, with no allowance for funds to be carried over without valid justification.

He emphasised the need for procurement plans to align with approved interventions and for fast-tracked approvals to avoid delays.

To strengthen project management and accountability, the ministry will introduce capacity-building programmes and mentorship initiatives.

Quarterly reviews will monitor fund utilisation, with sanctions for institutions failing to comply.

Transparency will be boosted by a public dashboard showcasing disbursement and utilisation data, alongside mandatory project progress reports from institutions.

Alausa urged all stakeholders to uphold accountability, reminding that every naira from TETFund represents public trust.

This move follows warnings from TETFund earlier in 2025 about delisting institutions that fail to access or use their allocations, a policy aimed at ensuring resources directly impact infrastructure, campus security, and healthcare.

In 2025, TETFund allocated N1.6 trillion to Nigerian tertiary institutions, reinforcing the importance of effective utilisation for national educational development.
