Dangote Refinery denies dirty fuel import claims

Dangote Refinery dirty fuel claims are false and malicious, says management. Cargo was feedstock, not petrol. Firm reaffirms commitment to clean fuel

Dangote Refinery dirty fuel claims have been firmly dismissed by the company’s management, who labelled the reports as “false, malicious, and misleading”.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Dangote Petroleum Refinery clarified that the cargo in question was an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol (PMS).

The refinery explained that the material is intended to be fully processed in its refining units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.

The company stressed that its operations are in line with global best practices, particularly for a facility located within a Free Trade Zone.

“We refine and sell only high-quality fuels that are compliant with all regulatory specifications,” the statement read.

The refinery also pointed to its exports to the United States and Europe—markets known for their stringent environmental regulations—as evidence of its commitment to global standards.

“All our imports are supported by quality certificates and shared with regulators,” the statement continued. “In the spirit of full transparency and accountability, we are willing to make these documents available to the public.”

Management reassured stakeholders of its mission to advance Nigeria’s energy independence, ensure transparency, and supply cleaner, high-quality fuels for both local and international markets.

The statement comes amid widespread online speculation suggesting that the refinery was involved in importing high-sulphur petrol, sparking concern among industry observers.

The management’s swift response aims to put such speculation to rest.
