OPay launches LASU scholarship under ₦1.2bn CSR drive

OPay LASU scholarship launched under N1.2bn CSR initiative, giving 20 students full scholarships yearly for 10 years. LASU VC hails education impact

OPay LASU scholarship scheme has officially launched, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Lagos State University and the fintech firm on Monday.

The initiative will see 20 LASU students awarded full scholarships annually for the next 10 years.

This strategic partnership is part of OPay’s ₦1.2 billion Empowering Futures programme, a long-term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan aimed at supporting high-achieving but financially disadvantaged students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony at LASU, Vice Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello praised the fintech company’s commitment to education and youth empowerment.

“This generous act underscores OPay’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and supporting the dreams of young Nigerians,” she said. “The scholarship will undoubtedly alleviate financial burdens and motivate our students to strive for excellence.”

The Vice Chancellor described the partnership as a shared vision between LASU and OPay to advance innovation and academic access in Nigeria.

Registrar Mr Emmanuel Fanu echoed the sentiments, noting that the impact of the scholarship will extend well beyond the university.

“You may not immediately know the impact of this gesture, but it will transform lives and inspire students to become contributors to society,” he remarked.

Representing OPay, Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Wang reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s future.

“We believe education is the foundation of society. That’s why OPay is committed to sponsoring 20 LASU students every year for the next decade, helping them pursue their dreams more easily.”

She also revealed that OPay plans to invest further in youth development by opening Cyberlabs and creating graduate employment opportunities for outstanding students within the company’s workforce of over 5,000 employees.

The ₦1.2bn OPay 10-Year Scholarship Programme is designed to drive educational advancement and deepen the company’s contribution to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

The scheme is already impacting other institutions, and LASU is the latest to join.

Established in 2018, OPay is a leading Nigerian fintech brand offering services such as money transfer, bill payments, airtime and data purchase, merchant payments, and more.

The firm is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), enjoying the same coverage as commercial banks.

With a strong reputation for network reliability and data security, OPay is now building its legacy in educational CSR, blending fintech innovation with meaningful social impact.
