NAFDAC destroys counterfeit products valued at N20bn in Ibadan, removing expired, banned, and unsafe goods to protect public health

The exercise targeted counterfeit, expired, banned, and substandard items as part of the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health.

Products destroyed included substandard and falsified medicines, unsafe processed foods, counterfeit cosmetics, and various expired goods seized from manufacturers, importers, and distributors across the South-West.

The exercise also encompassed expired and damaged products voluntarily submitted by compliant companies, NGOs, and trade associations.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, praised the collaborative efforts of enforcement agencies, noting the recent handover of 25 containers of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, including a reefer container, from Customs for destruction.

“This is a clear demonstration of our collective commitment to protecting the health of Nigerians,” Adeyeye said, highlighting the support of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

She reiterated NAFDAC’s determination to permanently remove unsafe products from circulation, adding, “We will continue to work relentlessly to safeguard the health and wellbeing of every Nigerian.”

The destruction exercise, attended by officials and stakeholders from across the region, reflects NAFDAC’s proactive approach in tackling counterfeit goods that threaten public safety and underscores the agency’s sustained national fight against falsified products.
