FUNAAB matriculation reaches a historic 6,356 students, marking the university’s highest intake since inception and a major institutional milestone

The acting head of the Directorate of Public Relations, Olasunkanmi Olajide, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the ceremony coincided with the university’s 13th Commencement Lecture held at the Professor Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building.

Addressing the students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Babatunde Kehinde, described the record admission as a significant milestone that reflects the rising confidence of parents and prospective students in the university’s academic standard and ethos.

He urged the new intakes to embrace discipline, decency, and responsibility, reminding them that the university expects a minimum of 70 per cent class attendance and strict adherence to established rules.

He said FUNAAB remains a nurturing ground for future leaders who must embody character and discipline at every stage of their academic journey.

Prof Kehinde reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for misconduct and stressed that engagements with the Student Union would continue to be guided by dialogue, responsibility, and mutual respect.

He assured the fresh students that their rights would be upheld while emphasising that accountability remained paramount.

Delivering the commencement lecture titled “Future Leaders of Character in Agriculture: Building Capacity Today for National and Global Impact Tomorrow”, Prof Subuola Fasoyiro of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, challenged the students to build competence, capacity, and strong moral character as foundations for meaningful leadership.

She highlighted key leadership qualities such as vision, strategic thinking, courage, emotional intelligence, integrity, teamwork, and resilience, describing them as essential tools for navigating a world defined by rapid change.

Prof Fasoyiro also underscored the importance of clarity, commitment, consistency, character, and contribution in nation-building.

Encouraging the students to take their personal growth seriously, she noted that the future belongs to those who invest in discipline and continuous learning.

According to her, when students prioritise character, their reputation naturally follows.
