Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar officially registers as a member of the African Democratic Congress, strengthening Nigeria’s opposition ahead of 2027 elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The registration took place on Monday in Adamawa, following Atiku’s announcement to ADC supporters and stakeholders over the weekend.

Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to the former vice president, confirmed the development to PUNCH Online.

Atiku’s arrival was met with enthusiastic supporters, who greeted his convoy with drums, songs, and placards bearing his image.

The former vice president waved to well-wishers as he received his official ADC membership card.

In a brief post on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the registration, Atiku wrote: “It’s official. -AA.”

The move formalises Atiku’s affiliation with the ADC coalition party, which he had endorsed in July as a platform for opposition leaders—including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and other key opposition figures had delayed their formal registration.

Political analysts say Atiku’s official membership is likely to strengthen the ADC’s profile and consolidate opposition efforts ahead of the next general election.
