Igbo Community endorsement of SDP candidate Obinna Simon boosts his bid for AMAC chairmanship ahead of the February 2026 council election

The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory has formally endorsed Dr Obinna Simon, the Social Democratic Party candidate for Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, ahead of the February 2026 local government elections.

The endorsement was announced in a statement issued to journalists in Abuja on Sunday and jointly signed by the association’s President General, Engineer Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and Secretary General, Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah.

According to the association, the decision followed a detailed assessment of the policy proposals and campaign manifestos presented by candidates contesting the AMAC chairmanship.

The group said Dr Simon’s vision, technical expertise and understanding of governance challenges stood out as best suited to address the needs of the Federal Capital Territory’s diverse population.

The statement described the SDP candidate’s grasp of complex social and economic issues as impressive, adding that his policy direction reflected a strong commitment to inclusive governance.

The association expressed confidence that Dr Simon would effectively represent the interests of all residents of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, regardless of background or affiliation.

It highlighted his focus on community development, social welfare and economic empowerment as key factors influencing the endorsement, describing his integrity and credibility as unquestionable.

The Igbo Community Association further resolved to mobilise support for the SDP candidate, urging AMAC residents to align with what it described as a credible and people-centred leadership option.

The endorsement is expected to strengthen Dr Simon’s campaign ahead of the closely watched council election, as community groups increasingly play a decisive role in grassroots political mobilisation within the Federal Capital Territory.
