Calvin Bassey praised as AFCON hero despite Morocco loss

Calvin Bassey earns widespread praise after a heroic display in Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final loss to Morocco

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been widely praised as Nigeria’s standout performer following defeat to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria lost 4 to 2 on penalties after a goalless draw over 120 minutes on Wednesday night. The tense contest took place at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah.

Despite the disappointment, supporters singled out Calvin Bassey for a commanding defensive display.

Many said his performance kept Morocco at bay throughout regulation and extra time.

The Fulham defender delivered 11 clearances and won six of nine ground duels. He also helped Nigeria play out from the back under sustained pressure.

Moroccan stars Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz found little space. Nigeria conceded no goal during open play.

Fans flooded social media with praise, describing Bassey as a wall, a rock and a warrior. Several called him the Man of the Match.

One supporter wrote that Calvin Bassey AFCON semifinal display neutralised Morocco’s attack. Another said the defender did not put a foot wrong throughout the tournament.

Bassey, however, received a yellow card during the first half. The booking rules him out of Nigeria’s third place match against Egypt.

Some fans criticised the decision and questioned the standard of officiating. They argued the caution was unjustified.

Morocco dominated possession and recorded 16 shots to Nigeria’s two. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made several crucial saves to keep the score level.

In the shootout, Paul Onuachu and Fisayo Dele Bashiru scored for Nigeria. Misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved costly.

Nigeria will face Egypt in Saturday’s third place match. Morocco will meet Senegal in Sunday’s final.

While the Super Eagles fell short, Calvin Bassey’s heroic display provided a powerful moment of pride for Nigerian supporters.
