The six part series is a sequel to Afolayan’s award winning film Anikulapo and is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on January 30.
Sharing the trailer on social media, Afolayan described the new season as a deeper and more intense continuation of the story.
“Once power is awakened, it demands a price. From Oyo to foreign lands, love is tested, and loyalties are shaken. This season, survival is the real crown, and everything you think you know will be questioned,” he wrote.
The story continues the journey of Saro, a man who returned from death with the extraordinary power to resurrect the dead.
In the series, Saro must navigate dangerous political intrigues, shifting alliances and personal sacrifices as his powers draw both admiration and threat.
Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens is set against the rich cultural and historical backdrop of the Oyo Empire and beyond, further expanding the world introduced in the original film.
The series was filmed in Ghana in partnership with the National Film Authority and features a diverse cast that includes Okusaga Adeoluwa, Kiekie, Antar Laniyan and Saidi Balogun.
With themes of power, loyalty and survival woven into its narrative, the series is expected to build on the success of the original film while introducing new characters and storylines.
