The Edo State Police Command said the suspect was taken into custody following investigations into the death of a 32 year old woman, Joy Jerome, whose body was discovered near a river in the Ikpe community of Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area.

Confirming the development in Benin City on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a distress report on January 10 about a lifeless female body found along a roadside.

She explained that operatives from the Idogbo Division promptly visited the scene and conveyed the body to a nearby hospital, where the woman was confirmed dead and later deposited at the mortuary.

According to the police spokesperson, preliminary investigations identified the deceased as Joy Jerome, a resident of Upper Sakponba, and revealed that she had been in a romantic relationship with the suspect.

Further findings showed that on January 9, 2026, the couple had an argument while travelling together in the suspect’s commercial bus.

The disagreement reportedly escalated after accusations of infidelity, leading to a violent confrontation.

Police said the suspect later rushed the woman to a hospital when she became unresponsive, but she was declared dead on arrival.

Investigators alleged that he subsequently transported her body to the Ikpe community, where it was abandoned before he fled.

In a disturbing twist, the suspect allegedly contacted the family of the deceased after the incident, claiming he had not seen her for several days.

The police described the case as tragic and shocking, noting that the suspect has confessed to the crime.

The command added that he would be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
