Africa Gospel Film Project launches to train African Christian filmmakers, boosting skills, spiritual depth, and global distribution opportunities

Abuja Gospel Cinema International has officially launched the Africa Gospel Film Project (AGFP), a multi-year initiative aimed at transforming faith-based filmmaking across Africa.

The project is designed to equip Christian filmmakers with professional skills, spiritual formation, and pathways to global distribution.

President of Gospel Cinema International, Mr Bright Wonder Obasi, explained that Africa is home to over 600 million Christians, yet its faith-based films remain underrepresented in the international market.

AGFP seeks to close this gap through structured training, high-quality content production, and strategic global connections.

The project will begin with a six-day Immersive Filmmaking and Spiritual Formation Programme from 13 to 18 April 2026 in Nigeria.

This will be followed by the production of an eight-episode faith-based television series later in the year.

Obasi described film as a powerful tool for shaping beliefs and values, emphasising that AGFP focuses not just on technical skills but on developing storytellers with spiritual responsibility.

The programme will cover screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, producing, and acting, while incorporating mentorship, collaborative production models, and international distribution guidance.

Highlighting challenges in the Christian film sector, Obasi cited overreliance on verbal preaching, limited visual storytelling, weak funding, inadequate distribution, and a lack of engagement with younger audiences.

He assured that AGFP aims to address these gaps with compelling narratives, professional standards, and relevant themes to re-engage viewers.

Applications for partnerships and participation are currently open, with Gospel Cinema International positioning AGFP as a catalyst to redefine Christian filmmaking in Africa.

The organisation remains committed to producing faith-based content that can inspire audiences and shape culture globally.
