The suspect, Chinonso Amadi, a Nigerian national living in Ballingo, South Africa, was apprehended with assistance from South African authorities.

Amadi is now being extradited to the United States to face charges.

Benzon, who undertook the investigation independently, reportedly used his law enforcement expertise to coordinate with local authorities and gather intelligence on Amadi’s whereabouts.

The collaborative effort underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling cross-border cybercrime.

Details on the case revealed that the scam involved sophisticated online fraud, which led to substantial financial losses for the victim.

The FBI has commended Benzon’s initiative, highlighting the critical role retired law enforcement professionals can play in assisting ongoing investigations.

Authorities stressed that Amadi will face prosecution under U.S. law, and the extradition process is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
