NUSA demands a transparent probe into the Emeka Uzor killing in Johannesburg and urges urgent action to protect Nigerians in South Africa

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has confirmed the Emeka Uzor killing in Johannesburg, describing the fatal shooting of the Nigerian national as a suspected assassination and a deeply disturbing development for the diaspora community.

NUSA President, Smart Nwobi, and National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, disclosed the incident in a joint statement issued in Abuja and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The union said Emeka Uzor was shot dead at about 3 p.m. on Sunday while seated inside his vehicle at a Carltex petrol station in Windsor East, Randburg, Johannesburg.

According to the statement, the deceased hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

NUSA described the killing as fitting into what it called a troubling pattern of violent attacks against Nigerian nationals living in South Africa.

The union called on the South African Police Service, particularly the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner, to commence a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.

The statement insisted that anyone found responsible for the killing must face the full weight of the law.

NUSA also urged South African authorities to take urgent steps to address what it described as recurring and targeted violence against Nigerians in the country.

The union appealed to the Nigerian government, through the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa and the Consulate General, to intensify diplomatic engagement with South African authorities to safeguard Nigerian lives and interests.

It further encouraged the Nigerian Mission to work closely with NUSA as a community-based organisation to pursue diplomatic and legal solutions to the persistent attacks.

While expressing confidence in South Africa’s justice system, NUSA said it hoped a diligent investigation would lead to the identification and prosecution of those responsible, providing closure for the victim’s family.

The union also urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding in the wake of the tragedy, assuring the community that it was engaging with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
