Lagos Coastal Raid leads to 75 arrests along Lagos–Calabar Road as authorities move to prosecute suspects over crime and public nuisance

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to prosecute 75 suspects arrested during a late-night enforcement operation along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, as authorities intensify efforts to restore order and security in the area.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Task Force carried out the operation at about 10 pm on Wednesday, targeting identified black spots along the corridor.

According to Mr Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos Coastal Raid resulted in the arrest of 68 males and seven females. Substances suspected to be illicit drugs were also recovered at the scene.

The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations, in line with relevant state laws covering environmental offences, public nuisance, drug-related crimes and assault.

During the operation, one of the task force officers, Inspector Omosanjo Mohamed, sustained a serious head injury after being attacked by suspected hoodlums.

Mr Tokunbo Wahab said the officer is receiving medical treatment and warned that attacks on law enforcement personnel would not be tolerated.

The Lagos State Government described the enforcement as part of a broader and decisive campaign to rid public spaces of criminal elements and environmental violations.

Mr Tokunbo Wahab reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to maintaining safety along the coastal corridor and other parts of the state, stressing that the authorities would continue sustained monitoring and enforcement.

The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, particularly sections under construction and expansion, has recently attracted complaints from motorists and residents over harassment and insecurity.

Officials said the latest action reflects the state’s zero-tolerance stance on street crime and disorder, aimed at preserving Lagos as a safe and economically active urban centre.
