Atiku Abubakar criticises INEC over Ramadan poll date, warning February 20, 2027 elections may suppress voter turnout and harm inclusivity

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to urgently review its decision to hold Nigeria’s 2027 general elections on February 20, warning that the date coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and could suppress voter participation.

In a statement shared via social media, Atiku Abubakar criticised the electoral body’s scheduling, arguing that fixing a pivotal national exercise during a period of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection demonstrated a lack of sensitivity to Nigeria’s socio-religious dynamics.

Atiku Abubakar stressed that elections require “maximum participation, physical endurance and collective focus”, conditions he suggested may not be optimal during Ramadan, which is projected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

The former vice-president further questioned the commission’s planning competence, suggesting that difficulties with such a fundamental logistical issue could erode public confidence in its ability to deliver free, fair and credible elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier announced that presidential and National Assembly elections would take place on February 20, 2027, with governorship and state assembly polls scheduled for March 6, 2027, in line with the constitutional timetable released in Abuja.

The decision has ignited widespread debate among religious leaders, civil society organisations and political stakeholders, some of whom argue that the overlap with Ramadan may dampen turnout and civic engagement, particularly in predominantly Muslim communities.

In response to mounting criticism, the Independent National Electoral Commission acknowledged the concerns and said consultations with key stakeholders were under way.

The commission indicated that it could seek legislative intervention if necessary, while emphasising that any adjustment must comply strictly with constitutional and statutory provisions.
