Federal Court adjourns Ogun Governor qualification suit

Federal High Court adjourns Ogun Governor qualification suit to July 9, amid allegations of discrepancies in educational and NYSC records

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has adjourned a suit challenging the educational qualifications of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to July 9, 2026.

The suit, filed by Human Global Resource Initiative, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, and Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, is before Justice Aneke in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/2026.

The originating summons seeks judicial clarification on whether Abiodun’s declarations on oath submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2014, 2019, and 2023 general elections were truthful.

The plaintiffs allege discrepancies in both his primary and tertiary education, as well as omissions regarding National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participation and a purported 1986 indictment and imprisonment.

Lead counsel to the plaintiffs, Professor Yemi Oke (SAN), emphasised that the suit aims to interpret constitutional and electoral provisions regarding false declarations.

“We are not particular about any candidate; we want the court to clarify the position of the law on whether a person who allegedly makes false declarations on oath while filling INEC forms can contest elections,” he said.

Oke dismissed claims that the suit could not proceed due to the constitutional immunity of a sitting governor.

“Originating summons are meant for the court to interpret the law and make necessary pronouncements. It has nothing to do with immunity,” he added.

Executive Director of Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, said the action seeks to promote accountability and ethical governance.

“This is not just about the Governor of Ogun State. It is about ensuring that our political system is free from moral corruption and that those in leadership positions are held accountable,” he said.

Similarly, Comrade Adewale Ojo, Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), stressed the need for due process to prevent irregularities in the electoral system.

He noted that ensuring transparency and accountability would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

The plaintiffs are expected to file additional submissions, while the respondents will be required to enter appearances and submit counter-affidavits ahead of the July hearing.
