Media executive Mo Abudu opens up on risky career move at 40

Mo Abudu career shift story reveals how the media executive left oil and gas at 40 to follow her passion and build a global media empire

Nigerian media executive Mo Abudu has revealed details of her bold decision to leave a stable oil and gas career at the age of 40 to pursue a calling in the media industry.

Mo Abudu made the disclosure while speaking at a conference focused on career growth and personal development, where the media entrepreneur described the move as a defining moment driven by purpose rather than necessity.

According to Mo Abudu, the decision to step away from a secure corporate role was not prompted by dissatisfaction, but by a strong conviction that a different path was required.

Mo Abudu explained that a successful career had already been established in the oil and gas sector, including senior roles in human resources and training at ExxonMobil, where professional achievements earned recognition and stability.

Despite these accomplishments, Mo Abudu career shift was guided by a deeper sense of direction, which ultimately led to the founding of EbonyLife TV, a platform that has since become influential in promoting African storytelling on a global stage.

The transition marked a powerful turning point, transforming Mo Abudu from a corporate executive into a leading figure in media and entertainment.

Since entering the industry, Mo Abudu has produced and executive produced several acclaimed projects, including The Wedding Party, The Governor, Castle and Castle, and Chief Daddy, all of which have contributed to expanding the visibility of African narratives.

The journey has also been marked by recognition for elevating local content to international audiences, reinforcing the impact of the decision taken years earlier.

Reflecting on the experience, Mo Abudu emphasised that the shift required courage and faith, particularly given the absence of external pressure to leave a well-established career.
