Kcee music industry struggles revealed as Nigerian singer opens up on rejection, Limpopo success, and global breakthrough with Ojapiano

Nigerian singer Kcee has opened up about the emotional challenges he faced in his music career, revealing that years of hard work went largely unrecognised by the industry despite strong fan support.

Speaking during an interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, Kcee reflected on what he described as a painful period of feeling overlooked, despite consistent effort and dedication to his craft.

Kcee said the lack of recognition went beyond awards and nominations, stressing that it deeply affected him at a personal level as he watched his fan base continue to grow without corresponding industry validation.

“The fans were the ones behind me,” Kcee said, explaining that he often felt disappointed by what he perceived as unfair treatment from award bodies and industry gatekeepers.

The singer admitted the experience was emotionally taxing, noting that it once left him in tears, though he has since shifted his perspective on success and recognition.

Kcee highlighted his breakthrough hit Limpopo as a defining turning point in his career, describing the moment as deeply emotional after years of struggle in the Nigerian music scene.

“When ‘Limpopo’ came, I was in tears that God had answered my prayers,” Kcee said, adding that the song propelled him into the global music market and marked a major milestone in his journey.

He also revealed that the track became a significant financial success, particularly through ringback tones, which were a major revenue stream at the time, describing the earnings as substantial and life-changing.

Beyond Limpopo, Kcee pointed to his recent viral hit Ojapiano as evidence of his continued relevance, noting its rapid spread on TikTok and the industry conversations it triggered regarding chart performance and recognition.

Despite past frustrations, Kcee said his focus has now shifted from awards to impact, global reach, and financial reward, emphasising that longevity in music matters more to him than trophies.
