Enugu child death arrest confirmed as police detain stepmother over alleged fatal abuse of nine-year-old girl in Enugu State

The confirmation was contained in a statement shared on Monday via the WhatsApp media platform linked to Governor Peter Mbah, detailing how the suspect, reportedly from Oderiko community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in connection with the child’s death.

According to preliminary accounts cited by residents of Nchatancha, Emene, the victim was said to have suffered repeated abuse before the fatal incident, which allegedly occurred around 3 p.m. at the family’s residence.

Enugu child death arrest has triggered widespread outrage, with authorities describing the case as deeply disturbing and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, stated that the state government would ensure strict prosecution of the suspect in line with the law.

“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. We swung into action immediately upon learning of this tragedy to ensure the suspect was arrested,” Enih said.

She further stressed that the government would closely monitor the investigation and judicial process, insisting that justice must be delivered swiftly and without compromise.

“We will be pressing for a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure that justice is not just done, but done swiftly. Nobody should take another person’s life, especially that of a child in Enugu State. We condemn the act in totality,” she added.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting minors, warning that anyone found culpable in child abuse or violence against children would face prosecution.
