Afrobeats star Skales sparks online debate after urging Nigerian youths to relocate abroad in search of safety and better opportunities

Afrobeats singer Skales, born Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, has triggered widespread reactions on social media after urging Nigerian youths to prioritise relocating abroad in pursuit of safety and success.

In a post shared on his X handle, the singer said leaving Nigeria offered young people a better chance of survival and the opportunity to fulfil their ambitions.

“As a young Nigerian, your biggest dream should be to leave Nigeria so you can survive and actually achieve your dream by at least staying alive,” the musician wrote.

The comments quickly ignited intense debate online, with many users criticising the singer for encouraging emigration instead of promoting civic responsibility and national development.

Skales’ remarks about leaving Nigeria also sparked reactions from many Nigerians who argued that relocating abroad does not automatically guarantee security or prosperity.

One user, identified as JohnBullaSings, faulted the singer’s position, stating that migration may not work for everyone.

“This your advice no gel. Just because it worked for you doesn’t mean it’s for everyone,” the commenter wrote.

Another user, Sally, argued that racism and discrimination remained major challenges for Africans living overseas.

“Lol, so migrating to white man’s land where your first crime is your skin colour guarantees your security?” the user asked.

Some commenters also accused the singer of speaking negatively about the country that contributed to his rise to fame and success in the entertainment industry.

A user identified as Okoyemekun said it was disappointing to see successful Nigerians “talking down on the country” after benefiting from opportunities at home.

Others, however, maintained that Nigeria’s economic hardship and security concerns have continued to push many young professionals and skilled workers to seek opportunities abroad.

The conversation surrounding the Skales Nigeria exit advice reflects growing public frustration over unemployment, insecurity and living conditions, issues that have fuelled increasing migration trends among Nigerian youths in recent years.

Despite the backlash, several social media users insisted that meaningful reforms and accountability from political leaders remained essential to improving conditions within the country.
