ISWAP fighters killed in North-East Nigeria as troops and US AFRICOM launch coordinated airstrikes eliminating over 20 terrorists in Metele

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that Nigerian troops, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (US AFRICOM), have killed more than 20 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in a coordinated air operation in North-East Nigeria.

The operation was carried out in the Metele general area following intelligence reports indicating the movement and regrouping of terrorist elements within the region.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the military said the joint ISWAP fighters killed North-East Nigeria operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and deny insurgents safe havens across the country.

According to the statement, the targeted airstrikes struck ISIS/ISWAP fighters who were observed converging before the operation was launched, resulting in the elimination of more than 20 terrorists.

The outcome was described as a significant success in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign, noting that the Armed Forces will continue sustained operations in partnership with US AFRICOM.

Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba added that ongoing missions are aimed at disrupting terrorist movements, eliminating fighters, and preventing regrouping activities in affected regions.

He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to ensuring that no safe haven exists for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria, stressing its resolve to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
