Liverpool appoint Iraola as new manager after dismissing Arne Slot following a disappointing Premier League campaign

Liverpool FC have appointed Andoni Iraola as the club’s new manager following the dismissal of Arne Slot after a disappointing Premier League title defence.

The Premier League giants confirmed Iraola’s arrival on Thursday, ending speculation over who would succeed Slot, whose two-year tenure was abruptly brought to an end last weekend.

British media reports indicated that the 43-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year contract, although Liverpool did not disclose the length of the agreement in its official announcement.

Speaking after his appointment, Iraola expressed enthusiasm about joining one of world football’s most successful clubs.

“Really excited, really excited, because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world,” he said.

The appointment follows an impressive spell at AFC Bournemouth, where Iraola guided the south coast club to a sixth-place Premier League finish and secured its first-ever qualification for European competition through the Europa League.

Iraola’s stock rose significantly during three seasons at Bournemouth, where the club improved from 12th to ninth before reaching sixth place this season.

His work with emerging talents, including Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott, also earned widespread praise.

Liverpool’s decision to appoint Iraola comes after growing criticism of Slot’s second season at Anfield.

The Dutchman struggled to maintain the momentum generated during his debut campaign, when he delivered a record-equalling 20th English league title.

Despite that early success, Liverpool endured a turbulent 2025/26 season, failing to win a trophy and ultimately finishing fifth in the Premier League standings.

The campaign was marked by several setbacks, including the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident last July and inconsistent performances despite substantial investment in new signings.

Reports also suggested tensions emerged between Slot and star forward Mohamed Salah, who had publicly called for a return to the aggressive, high-intensity approach associated with former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Iraola is widely regarded as a coach who favours an attacking, high-pressing style, drawing comparisons with Klopp’s successful tactical philosophy that delivered Premier League and Champions League titles during his nine-year reign.

Born in Spain’s Basque Country, Iraola enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Athletic Bilbao before finishing his playing days in Major League Soccer with New York City FC.

Liverpool’s hierarchy will hope the appointment marks the beginning of a fresh era after a season that saw the club finish 25 points behind champions Arsenal FC.
