Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has been ruled out of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal in Leiria after suffering a suspected rupture of his left Achilles tendon during training on Saturday evening.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who plays for SK Slavia Prague, sustained the injury during a training session and received immediate treatment from the national team’s medical staff before being withdrawn from further participation.
Medical officials are expected to conduct additional scans in the coming days to determine the full extent of the injury, although sources within the Super Eagles camp have already described the setback as potentially long-term.
The Igoh Ogbu Injury comes as a significant blow to preparations by Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle ahead of one of the team’s most high-profile fixtures of the international window.
Chelle is already dealing with a depleted squad following the withdrawal of captain Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who both cited the demands of a lengthy club season.
The coach is also without Ola Aina, who was left out after missing the closing stages of his club campaign due to injury.
Ogbu had been expected to play a prominent role in Nigeria’s defensive setup following a series of impressive performances in European football that enhanced his standing within the national team.
The defender’s latest setback adds to a challenging injury history that has periodically interrupted his progress at both club and international level.
Meanwhile, Portugal have received a major boost ahead of Wednesday’s encounter following the arrival of four players from Paris Saint-Germain.
The quartet of Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos joined the Portuguese squad on Saturday after helping PSG secure victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final.
All four players are expected to be available for selection, providing Portugal coach Roberto Martínez with a near full-strength squad.
Nigeria head into the match after a productive international window that included retaining the Unity Cup in London with victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica before earning a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw.
The two nations have met only once previously at senior level. Their last encounter came in Lisbon on November 17, 2022, when Portugal recorded a commanding 4-0 victory through goals from Bruno Fernandes, Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário.
Wednesday’s friendly will be played at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, with Portugal viewing the contest as an important part of preparations for the forthcoming World Cup.
