Trincão warns of a tough Nigeria friendly clash as Portugal prepare for World Cup build-up and Super Eagles continue strong form
Portugal forward Francisco Trincão has described Nigeria as a strong and physically demanding opponent ahead of Wednesday’s international friendly, warning that the upcoming Nigeria friendly clash is expected to be a challenging test for both sides as they continue preparations for major tournaments.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, June 10, 2026, in Portugal, Trincão said the Super Eagles would provide a difficult challenge due to their physical style of play and recent form, while emphasising that Portugal’s primary focus remains their own tactical development ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria head into the fixture in encouraging form, having recorded wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica and a draw against Poland in their last three friendly matches.
The run of results has strengthened confidence within the squad as they continue rebuilding ahead of upcoming competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Trincão, a former Barcelona player, noted similarities between Nigeria and Congo, another opponent Portugal are expected to face during World Cup preparations.
He said both African sides share physical intensity and require disciplined tactical execution from his team.
Portugal, meanwhile, are using the fixture as part of their broader strategy to refine performance patterns and build momentum ahead of the global tournament.
Trincão stressed that the team would focus primarily on their own structure rather than adapting specifically to Nigeria’s style of play.
“We will strive to perform at our best. It will be challenging. We aim to deliver a strong performance and enter the World Cup with confidence,” he said.
