Tinubu announces Yar’Adua University Renaming in Kaduna, honouring Shehu Yar’Adua during Democracy Day address and national honours rollout

President Bola Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, announced the Yar’Adua University Renaming on Friday, June 12, 2026, in Abuja, during his Democracy Day address, converting the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, into a full university in honour of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.

The decision marks a major institutional upgrade and reflects government recognition of contributors to Nigeria’s democratic transition.

President Bola Tinubu described the gesture as part of efforts to honour architects of modern democratic governance.

The institution, formerly known as the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, will now operate as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. The move was announced as part of a wider set of national recognitions.

President Bola Tinubu said General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey through vision and national partnership. He described the late military officer as a key figure in Nigeria’s political evolution.

The Yar’Adua University Renaming was presented alongside other Democracy Day honours, which included recognition of more than 30 democracy activists and soldier-democrats linked to the June 12 struggle.

The list also features posthumous awards for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.

The announcement formed part of a broader national address focused on democratic consolidation, national unity, and institutional reform.

The development has been described within official circles as a symbolic and strategic step aimed at preserving Nigeria’s democratic history while investing in specialised education for national development.
