The Pharaohs held their nerve to beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Dallas, securing a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Egypt secured a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday.

The Pharaohs made an impressive start and were rewarded in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose highest to head home a precise cross from Karim Hafez, giving the African side a deserved first-half lead.

Ashour’s early strike capped Egypt’s positive opening spell as they sought a first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.

Australia responded with greater urgency after the interval and restored parity in the 55th minute when Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net under pressure from the Socceroos.

The own goal ensured an evenly balanced contest that neither side could settle during regulation or the additional 30 minutes of extra time.

Both teams created chances to snatch victory before the shootout. Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a crucial save late in normal time to deny Ramy Rabia, while the Socceroos also lost defender Jordan Bos to injury before half-time in a setback that disrupted their momentum.

The tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where Egypt displayed remarkable composure. Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converted their spot-kicks.

Australia’s hopes suffered an early blow when captain Harry Souttar fired the opening penalty over the crossbar. Teenager Lucas Herrington then struck the woodwork with Australia’s fourth attempt, leaving Egypt one successful kick away from victory.

Abdelmaguid stepped forward and confidently found the bottom corner to seal a 4-2 shootout triumph, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

The victory marks Egypt’s first successful knockout match at a FIFA World Cup and continues an impressive tournament for the seven-time African champions, who progressed from the group stage before overcoming Australia in dramatic fashion.
